Summary of the book:

The news media is a key resource for citizens when thinking about European politics. This book deals with the role of television news in the process of European integration. It draws on interviews with journalists, analyses of news, and experiments testing the effects of news. The book analyses the editorial policies of news organizations in Britain, Denmark, and the Netherlands. It describes the characteristics of news about European affairs and it investigates the effects of television news on public opinion formation.

The study demonstrates that television news has the ability to affect viewers’ thoughts when conceiving of EU issues and that audiences rely on the journalistic spin on a topic when interpreting an issue. Moreover, certain types of reporting contribute to political cynicism, but there is not evidence to suggest that this negatively affects public support for, for example, EU enlargement. The study suggests that citizens have the capacity to distinguish between cynical views of politics and support for policies.

The book is of interest to journalists, policy-makers, and students of journalism, communication, and political science.
