Since 1999 I have carried out research on the elections for the European Parliament. In 2009 this will be continued, following a NWO VICI grant (1.5 million $) and as part of the EU FP7 framework PIREDEU study (www.piredeu.eu)

The June 2004 elections for the European Parliament were historic.

- They were the first elections in the newly enlarged 25 country European Union, an unprecedented exercise in democracy with more than 350 eligible voters.
- They took place at a time where Europe’s future and legitimacy is more vigorously discussed than ever.
- They took place a few days before the European leaders agreed on the Constitutional Treaty.
- Finally they took place in the aftermath of some of the largest and most visible and concrete changes to the EU: the enlargement and the introduction of the euro, and at a time where several European governments were challenged in response to the war in Iraq.

With funding from a NWO (Dutch Science Foundation) VENI-grant a study involving interviews with journalists and campaign managers, a candidate survey, a media content analysis and public opinion surveys amongst the electorate was carried out

In 1999 less than 50% of EU's citizens went to the polls at the European Parliamentary elections. A research project from the Amsterdam School of Communications Research investigated the information environment, mobilization, and vote choice.
