When the European Union enlarges public support in existing member states is often divided. The European Union has expanded from 6 to currently 27 members and negotiations are ongoing with several countries, including Turkey.

Previous and ongoing research projects investigate the dynamics of public opinion and the role of the media. The research line currently concentrates on the issue of Turkish membership. In the past this was focused on the Eastern enlargement that took effect in 2004. A study involving panel survey data from Denmark and the Netherlands showed that the EU summit in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2002 boosted public discussion of and support for the enlargement in Denmark, while this remained stable in the Netherlands.

The key question for this completed project were: What role do the media play in shaping public perceptions and evaluations of European politics and economy?

The projects have been funded by the Danish Social Science Research Council, ASCoR, and the Dutch Science Foundation NWO

Articles from this research line have appeared in European Union Politics, Journal of Common Market Studies, Communication Research and European Journal of Communication
