Claes H. de Vreese (PhD) [[email]c.h.devreese at uva.nl[/email]] is Professor and Chair of Political Communication and Scientific Director of The Amsterdam School of Communications Research ASCoR in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. He is also Director of NESCoR, the Netherlands School of Communications Research, the national research school in communication science, recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences KNAW. Finally, he is Adjunct Professor of Political Science and Journalism at the University of Southern Denmark

His research interests include comparative journalism research, the effects of news, public opinion and European integration, effects of information and campaigning on elections, referendums and direct democracy.

He has published more than 35 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including Communication Research, Journalism Studies, Political Communication, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Scandinavian Political Studies, European Journal of Communication, West European Politics, EU Politics, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Mass Communication & Society, and European Journal of Political Research .

He is the author and editor of Framing Europe, Framing the Referendum Issue and Referendum Campaign Dynamics.

De Vreese teaches on topics relating to media and politics. He has taught at the European Journalism Center, the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam, and the International School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the UvA. He has visited universities is several countries and was a visiting scholar at Harvard University in 2004 and visiting professor at the University of Zurich in 2007.

He has presented more than 80 conference papers at national and international conferences. He has given invited lectures at universities and organizations in places such as Utrecht, Twente, Bergen, Edinburgh, Atlanta (Emory), Boston (Harvard), Aalborg, Aarhus, Odense, Copenhagen, Friedrichshafen, Zurich, Dublin, Oxford, Florence, Brussels, Taormina (Sicily), Perugia (Italy), Maastricht, Washington DC, Hilversum, Los Angeles (USC), Liverpool, and Reykjavik.

Claes H de Vreese was the winner of the 2004 Nils Klim Prize, awarded by the Holberg Foundation. The prize is awarded to "one or several researchers below the age of 35 at the time of the nomination deadline who have made outstanding and internationally recognised contributions in the areas of arts and humanities, social sciences, law or theology".
